The City of Fairfield requires a business license for any person, partnership, corporation, and other entities engaged in business within the city limits. This includes contractors and their sub-contractors engaged in projects within the city limits. It is the responsibility of contractors to ensure their subcontractors obtain business licenses. Businesses, including home-based and online businesses, risk citations, fines, or penalties for operating without a business license.

The City's business license is a tax certificate and license as defined by the City's Municipal Code Chapter 10B. The business license is non-regulatory and it does not exempt businesses from obtaining further licensure and permits as required by local, county, state, and/or federal law.

The Business License Portal is where you can: apply for a new business license, renew your business license, report business closure, update business information, as well as search business licenses. Please note that you are not required to pay until approval. We will send communications by email on the status of your application as it progresses through the approval process. You are also welcome to apply in-person by utilizing the public access computers in the Community Development lobby of the 2nd floor of City Hall.

For new business licenses, including Home Occupation Permits, please expect up to 10 business days for processing--depending on the volume of applications received. Please note the business license tax certificate will be sent via email as a PDF attachment. Also, please make corrections through the 'Update' link in the business license portal, as soon as possible.

For businesses based outside of the City of Fairfield, such as contractors, please expect your business license to be processed within 24-48 hours.

New business license applications for business located in commercial/industrial zones must undergo the Certificate of Occupancy process, which includes a site visit by a Building Inspector. Once you have applied for the business license, please submit a floor plan of your business, showing dimensions, and contact us to schedule the site visit. Please expect three to four weeks for processing the Certificate of Occupancy.

Please note if there is a change in ownership (i.e., change in EIN or SSN), the existing business license must be closed and then the new owner must submit a new application.

Businesses involving any type of massage, solicitation/peddling, and secondhand dealers, must contact the Police Department for a permit in addition to the business license. Please note that the business license will not be issued until the permit has been approved.

Thank you for doing business within the City of Fairfield!
