The expansion of Fairfield's population base is balanced with commercial, office, and industrial development. The City has permitted almost seven million square feet of retail, office, and industrial development since 1995.

The location of Travis Air Force Base, the proximity and access to the rest of the Bay Area and the availability of land have combined to facilitate this development. A wide variety of manufacturing, light industry, back office, distribution, and research and development firms are located in Fairfield.
