Special Wastes and Household Hazardous Waste
Republic Services operates Solano Recycle, BOPA collection, and Household Hazardous Waste Collection at their 2901 Industrial Court, Fairfield, CA, Industrial Court facility.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) - Republic Services
Free drop off of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) for Fairfield and Travis Air Force Base residents at Republic Services. Proof of residency is required. Call Republic Services for an appointment or for more information.

Fairfield businesses that qualify as Small Quantity Generators may also dispose of their HHW at Republic Services for a small fee at 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. before each Residential drop-off event.

Caution - Compact Florescent Light (CFL) bulbs and fluorescent tubes contain mercury. Please follow proper disposal procedures for cleanup. Only bring unbroken bulbs and to the HHW collection days for disposal. Home Depots and Lowes accept CFL bulbs and tubes. Best Buy (CFL bulbs only). Contact their customer service staff to locate their Recycling Stations.
Recycle Used Motor Oil & Used Oil Filters
- Drop off your used motor oil at a Certified Used Oil Collection Center.
Most collection centers also accept your used oil filters for recycling. Please check to see which centers accept filters and recycle!
- Curbside Pickup of Used Motor Oil & Used Oil Filters
Fairfield residents may receive a free curbside collection of used motor oil and used oil filters. Boat owners may also have their bilge pad picked up curbside for recycling.
- Contact Solano Recycle to get your free used motor oil collection container and a filter collection bag. You may use a clear ziplock bag for your oil filter.
- Fill the collection container with your used motor oil, and drain all the oil from the oil filter, and place the filter or bilge pad in a clear ziplock plastic bag.
- Place the container and used oil filter (in the bag) next to your recycling carts on collection day.
A new collection container will be delivered to you when the old one is picked up. Please note that your used motor oil must be in the authorized collection container from Solano Garbage or it will not be picked up. Used oil filters and bilge pads from boats can be placed in clean, clear ziplock bags.
If you need new collection containers call 437-8900 and they will be delivered to your home, or you may pick them up at Republic Services at 2901 Industrial Court. You may also pick up collection containers at the Fairfield Recycles Event tent at special events such as Farmer's Market!

Used motor oil, oil filters, and bilge pads may be taken to the BOPA facility. Batteries, cooking oil, motor oil, oil filters, latex Paint, Antifreeze and E-Waste can be taken free-of-charge to the BOPA facility Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (closed 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.), and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Contaminated motor oil or other household chemicals should be taken on the HHW collection day. Proof of residency is required to drop off items at both BOPA and Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days.
Sharps - Hypodermic Needles and Lancets
Medical Waste may include items such as hypodermic needles and lancets--also called "sharps". It is illegal to throw sharps in the trash cart. Please dispose of sharps properly.

Needles must be sealed properly in a sharps container.

Unwanted Over the Counter Medication & Prescription Medication
Pharmaceutical waste can include unused or expired medication, over-the-counter and prescription medication, and vitamins and/or supplements for humans or pets. Some facilities and businesses are registered with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to collect your unused or expired medicines. Find an authorized drug collection site near you or call the DEA Diversion Control Division at (800) 882-9539.
Take-Back Events
Sign up to receive notifications for Solano County Wide Pharmaceutical Take-Back Events in your area. They are normally held in April and October.
Drop Off Locations
To find a collection location for expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medication check California Product Stewardship Council's Don't Rush to Flush - map. Please call ahead to get information on restrictions for drop off.
If you must dispose of pharmaceutical waste in the trash, please see the following guide to properly dispose of your pharmaceutical waste. Medical supplies such as I.V. bags and tubing cannot be recycled and should be properly sealed in a plastic bag and places in the trash.

Regulations for Collection of E-Waste
E-waste, universal waste, covered electronic devices, Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs), and CRT glass are all classified as hazardous waste when discarded and require proper handling and reporting.
E-Waste Events and Fundraisers
Any company collecting and transporting E-waste in the City is required to submit E-Waste Diversion Reports to the Public Works Department.
- Quarterly E-waste Diversion Reports must include:
- Annual E-waste Diversion Summary Reports are due by March of the following year
- For one time E-waste events held in the City

Other Types of Hazardous Waste
Smoke Detectors - Recycling
There are two types of smoke detectors sold today Photoelectric and Ionization. Photoelectric can be safely taken to e-waste drop-off sites for recycling. Ionization detectors contain a small amount of Americium 241 (AM 241), a radioactive isotope. Ionization detectors must be mailed to either the manufacturer or a recycling service such as Currie Environmental Services or EZ on the Earth. Thermostat Recycling
Older thermostats may contain mercury in the gages. It is illegal to dispose of items with mercury in the landfill. Please do not place old thermostats in the trash bin or dumpsters. There are free locations to drop off old thermostats offered through the Thermostat Recycling Corporation a non-profit agency that collects and recycles old thermostats through Produce Stewardship legislation. Paint Stewardship
The purpose of the Paint Stewardship Program is the following:
- Reduce the creation of postconsumer paint.
- Promote the reuse of postconsumer paint.
- Manage the end of the product's lifecycle, in an environmentally way.
This program makes it easier for consumers to recycle leftover paint. Citizens have access to drop-off locations where they can easily dispose of paint. Fairfield Citizens can drop off their used paint at the following locations:

Call ahead for hours and to make sure the store can accept
